State Report: 90% of Letcher County Students not ready for Kindergarten

Kentucky’s Kindergarten readiness remains down from before the pandemic. A new report from Kentucky Youth Advocates says based on their metrics 46% of kindergarten students were prepared for the 2023-24 school year, down from 51.4% before the 2017-18 year. It’s even more so in Letcher County, with Schools Superintendent Denise Yonts telling WYMT about 90 percent of students are not considered ready for Kindergarten. She says because so many programs for preschool kids were shut down, they lost not only educational skills like reading but also socialization skills. She says they are working on many fronts, including with parents, to help the kids catch up.
