State and federal aviation officials have voiced their support for a new Letcher County airport. At a meeting last week the commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Aviation and manager of the FAA’s Memphis Airports District met with local officials and engineers to discuss how they could muster the large amount of money that would be needed to replace the old Whitesburg Municipal Airport. The Mountain Eagle reports one official clarified that new airports are built with discretionary funds approved by Congress, not just from the FAA or state coffers, but vowed to help put together a plan.
