Letcher County Fiscal Court received a $3.3 million grant from the Kentucky River Area Development District through the Abandon Mine Lands Economic Revitalization Program (AMLER) to build a waste digester system.
This system, essentially a large composter, will convert organic waste into usable compost-like material while separating nonorganic waste, such as plastics.
Planned for the Letcher County Transfer Station, the project aims to reduce the cost of shipping waste out of the county, potentially creating 10 jobs and serving 7,000 households.
Completion is expected in the next two to three years.
