Legendary Belfry Football Coach Passes Away

Sad news as longtime Belfry Head Football Coach Philip Haywood has passed away from his injuries after a car crash on an icy road last Saturday.

As we reported earlier this week the Belfry Fire Chief said Haywood was driving when he hit a patch of black ice near Forest Hills and his car slid into a creek.

His daughter said at the time on social media he had a head injury, punctured lungs, and more. He was being treated at UK Hospital where he passed away Wednesday.

Haywood had coached Belfry since 1984 and was the winningest high school football coach in KHSAA history, winning state eight times and being named by USA Today as the best high school football coach in 2013.

He also wrote two books: “Faith, Family, and Football” and “Climb the Mountain”.
