Officials say after less than a year, the Leatherwood Off-Road Park is already having a big positive impact on the local economy. The 50,000 acre park is centered in Perry County but its 200 trails extend into Letcher, Leslie and Harlan counties as well. Perry County Judge-Executive Scott Alexander tells WYMT they knew it would be big eventually but didn’t realize it would happen so fast. He says they have had visitors from a dozen states and from as far as Oklahoma. And he says the tourism impacts are far-reaching, as the visitors all need to shop, eat, buy gas and more. Alexander says officials are working on plans to add more accommodations for people to stay longer.
