Free Black Lung Screenings Offered to Coal Miners in Whitesburg This Thursday

Free black lung screenings will be available for coal miners in eastern Kentucky later this week.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is bringing a mobile health unit to the Whitesburg Medical Center on Thursday, April 16. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to all current and former coal miners, including those who worked underground, on the surface, or under contract.

Health officials say the screenings are aimed at early detection of black lung disease, a serious but preventable condition caused by long-term exposure to coal dust.

Each screening takes about 30 minutes and includes a work and respiratory history questionnaire, a chest X-ray, blood pressure check, and a breathing test.

Officials emphasize that all screenings are free and confidential. Participants will receive a report on their lung health within about 12 weeks.

Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins will also be accepted. To schedule, miners can call 1-888-480-4042 or email cwhsp@cdc.gov.

Again, the screenings will take place Thursday, April 16, at the Whitesburg Medical Center.
