Federal Program Delivers Funding Boost to Wise and Dickenson Schools

Schools in Wise and Dickenson counties are getting a boost from a federal program that guarantees funding in rural areas that have timberland that doesn’t contribute to the tax base.

Congressman Morgan Griffith says this year the Secure Rural Schools program has nearly $13,000 coming to Dickenson County and more than $55,000 to Wise County.

The program, which started in 2020, guarantees counties a stable payment based on historical averages.

The money can go to schools, roads, or forest work.
