Big Sandy Jail Agrees for Inmates to Receive Meds from Drug Treatment Programs

Big Sandy Regional Detention Center has agreed to allow inmates to receive prescriptions for medication-assisted drug treatment programs. The decision is part of a settlement with the federal government following an investigation alleging Big Sandy was illegally denying substance abuse treatment such as Methadone or Suboxone following a complaint by a doctor who was treating an inmate for opioid use disorder. Mountain Top News reports Big Sandy has not admitted it specifically withheld any treatment but agreed to start allowing the meds after the government alleged they were violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. The settlement is in place for three years.
