Knott County native Lacy Hale has won the 2024 East Kentucky Leadership Award for Cultural-Arts. Known for her murals as well as other works, the Hindman native went to the Pratt Institute of Art in New York thanks to help from the community in paying for her first year. She tells WYMT she always intended to come back and use her art to give back to the region. She says beautifying communities helps make people proud to live there. In 2017 word of a white supremacist march coming to Pikeville inspired her to create work around the slogan “No Hate in My Holler” which has generated thousands of dollars in donations to organizations throughout the region.
