Kentucky State Police say a Letcher County man is in custody after an early morning domestic violence incident led to a lengthy standoff Friday in the Whitesburg community.
Troopers responded to a call on Buck Road around 4:12 a.m. and learned the people involved had gone to a nearby home. Police say when troopers attempted to make contact, 36-year-old Dusty Shell of Emmalena barricaded himself inside the residence with several other people and refused to come out.
During the standoff, one man and two women exited the home and told troopers Shell remained inside armed with a firearm along with another man. Kentucky State Police secured the area and called in the Special Response Team.
After negotiations, Shell surrendered without incident. He was taken to the Letcher County Jail and charged with second-degree assault involving domestic violence, second-degree terroristic threatening, and parole violation charges.
Police also arrested 45-year-old Amy Griffith of Hindman on an unrelated out-of-state warrant.
The investigation is continuing.
