Judge Stays on Case in Stines Murder Trial

The judge in the murder trial of former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines is staying on the case despite Stines’ attorney’s effort to get him disqualified.

Stines is charged with murder for the September 2024 shooting death of Letcher District Judge Kevin Mullins at the Court House.

A few weeks before his death, Mullins attended a commission meeting that the Stines case Special Judge Christopher Cohron also attended and video shows them conferring.

Cohron says his relationship with Mullins was professional, not personal, and he has no bias.

Stines’ attorney sent a recusal question to the Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice but this week it was denied.
