Some health officials are concerned that cockfighting could spread the growing threat of the H5N1 virus, known as bird flu, which could not only make pets and people sick but also damage the state’s $1.7 billion poultry industry.
One local veterinarian tells WYMT that cockfighting is not only animal cruelty but also creates ideal conditions for spreading the virus because the birds are kept in close, unsanitary conditions.
The increase in bird flu has led to millions of poultry industry birds being destroyed, spiking egg prices.
As for your pets, veterinarians say right now do not feed them raw meat, raw milk, or raw eggs.
