The University of Pikeville is among twelve colleges and universities that are getting a piece of more than $500,000 to hold summer residential programs focused on healthcare-related fields.
The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education says Kentucky has a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals, especially in rural areas and in specialties like nursing, medical technology and allied health.
They say the summer programs increase the number of students who stay in school and ultimately help address workforce shortages.
The CPE says UPike is getting about $42,000.
