A special judge and circuit court clerk have been appointed to oversee the trial of former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines who is charged with murder in the shooting death of Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins in the courthouse on September 19.
On Wednesday the Kentucky Chief Justice appointed Circuit Court Judge Christopher
Cohron, who regularly serves the 8th Judicial Circuit, to take over the case with Circuit
Court Clerk Cortney Shewmaker, who serves the 47th Judicial Circuit.
Stines has pleaded not guilty with his defense saying the shooting happened in a moment of
“extreme emotional disturbance”.
Stines is being held in the Leslie County Jail.
