WYMT says Thursday afternoon, Attorney General Russell Coleman and Commonwealth’s Attorney for the 27th Judicial Circuit Jackie Steele announced the indictment of former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines, 43, for murder of a public official.
A Letcher County Grand Jury indicted Stines on one count of murder, public official. According to the indictment, Stines shot and killed Letcher County District Court Judge Kevin Mullins on September 19 inside the judge’s chambers.
According to the Mountain Eagle, the indictment was handed up to Senior Judge Julia H. Adams, who served as circuit judge in Clark and Madison Counties before her retirement. She will preside over the arraignment for Stines.
According to the paper, Adams left open the possibility for Stines to be released from jail on bond, but warned the bond “would be significant”.
No other details or a motive was noted in the indictment.
Stines’ arraignment is set for Monday, Nov. 25 at noon.
