It’s Election Day. There are 16 polling locations open in Letcher County until 6:00pm and registered voters can vote at any one of them.
You can see the full list of locations on our Facebook Page at 103.9 The Bulldog WXKQ.
Besides the Presidential Election another important race is for State Senate District 29 for Letcher and other counties.
The ballot for that one is unusual; neither of the two listed candidates are running, following the death of Senator Johnnie Turner and the withdrawal from the race of his challenger, David Suhr.
There are 11 write-in candidates for that race so you’ll need to actively enter a name.
You can see all of their names on our Facebook Page.
There are also some issues on the ballot today.
Letcher County residents have a question on whether alcohol sales should be allowed. This was a cause championed by former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines because some of the taxes on the alcohol sales would go toward shoring up law enforcement needs.
Following Stines arrest on murder charges in connection with the shooting death of Judge Kevin Mullins, there has not been much public discussion either for or against the issue.
At the state level there are two constitutional amendments. Amendment 1 would stop
non-US citizens from being able to vote in local elections such as for school boards; you
must already be a US citizen to vote in federal and state-level elections.
Amendment 2 would allow for the possibility that public money could go toward schools that are not within the common school system; it does not automatically allow for public funding of
private schools – it changes language about how tax dollars are allocated for education.
