There’s a bill moving through the state legislature intended to help small coal mines stay in business by changing some safety rules. House Bill 85 is sponsored by Rep. Bill Wesley, who represents Estill County, and Rep. John Blanton who represents Knott County and part of Pike County. The bill calls for a crew of less than 10 people to only require one mine emergency technician. WYMT reports it passed in the House 75-18 and it’s now in the Senate awaiting approval.
