Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton has resigned. Last night the city council held a special meeting which Stapleton did not attend reportedly due to an injury he suffered a few weeks ago. Officials read a letter from Stapleton announcing his resignation due to the injury he said would inhibit him from doing the job. But WYMT reports that also on Tuesday a lawsuit was filed against Stapleton by a former employee alleging verbal and physical sexual assault. In his resignation letter Stapleton called the lawsuit “shocking”. Prestonsburg city councilman Rick Hughes has been appointed interim mayor.
