22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration returns to SKCTC Cumberland campus

CUMBERLAND, Ky. – For the first time in many years, Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College will host the 22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on its Cumberland campus. The event will take place on Fri., Jan. 17, beginning at 11 a.m., in the Godbey Appalachian Center’s Nicey and Alice Hazen Theater.

The program will feature a keynote address by community leader and Marine Corps veteran Samuel R. Coleman, Jr. of Middlesboro, Kentucky. Coleman has served on the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, the Kentucky African American Heritage Commission, and on various local boards throughout Southeast Kentucky.

Musical performances will be presented by Greater Mount Sinai Spirituals, retired SKCTC instructor Tammie Chapman, and Ruby and Jake Ravizee. Andrea Massey, the SKCTC Ready to Work coordinator, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies. The program also will include a special tribute to the late Johnnie Turner, presented by Erica Farmer-Miller, SKCTC workforce development training specialist.

A lunch will follow the program, catered by BearFoot Café & Catering. Guests also will have the opportunity to explore a Heritage Exhibit in the Godbey Appalachian Center’s Reecie and Martha Stagnolia Gallery.
