Charges Filed Against Suspected Shooter of Phelps High School Football Coach

Charges have been filed against a man suspected of shooting and injuring the Phelps High School football coach, David Jones, last month. Dennis Paige Junior faces charges in West Virginia for malicious wounding. Authorities said the shooting incident was a domestic incident. Paige surrendered to police yesterday.

 

 

Mine Blowout in Pike County

A mine blowout in Pike County damaged roadways and driveways, and caused other damage yesterday. Officials with the county say water filled the mine shaft, and then the pressure blew the water through the ground, causing a surge of water that washed out roads.

 

 

Perry County Trying to Find Owner of Abandoned Dog

A sick and injured dog, named Rooney, prompted an investigation in Perry County. Rooney had maggot-infested wounds, and was very ill when he was found over the weekend. The dog also suffered a head injury, and had rocks in his stomach. Deputies are trying to find who owned the dog and abandoned him, rather than taking him to a shelter.

 

 

Barbourville Church Finds More Drug-Related Items

For the second time in the past month, workers at a church in Barbourville found drug paraphernalia on the church grounds. The pastor at East Barbourville Baptist Church says needles and other drug-related items were found on the property, and a church bus was recently vandalized.

 

 

Beathitt County Schools to Close Aug 21 for Solar Eclipse

Breathitt County Schools will close on Monday due to the total solar eclipse. It is one of several school districts in the commonwealth that will not hold classes on August 21 because of safety concerns of massive traffic expected to be on the road once the eclipse is done, which will be the approximate time that school ends.
