Kentucky Division of Water Receives Grant

The US Department of Homeland Security awarded a 200-thousand dollar grant to the Kentucky Division of Water. The grant is for a pilot project that aims to improve dam safety, to research flood warning, and how instrumentation monitoring is used throughout the country. This is the hopes of finding a system that can be used in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The agency is hopeful that additional funding can be secured in the next year to help implement a safety plan in Kentucky.

 

 

Officials Evaluate Worth of Governor Bevin's Private Home

Officials went to Governor Matt Bevin’s private home in Louisville yesterday (July 31) because the Kentucky Republican is trying to prove that his home is worth 1.6 million, not 2.9 million as officials in Jefferson County claimed. This deserves further investigation because the man who sold the home to Bevin, Neil Ramsay, was recently appointed to the Kentucky Retirement Systems Board of Trustees. The appointment, and possible connection with the sale of the home, prompted watchdog groups to file ethics complaints.

 

 

Harlan County Woman Won in Court Against Employer

A judge awarded a Harlan County woman 150-thousand dollars in damages after her employer (Dr. Carl E. Smith) was accused of retaliating against her for complaining about sexual harassment. A jury found that Dr. Smith created a hostile work environment after she complained about inappropriate behavior.

 

 

Jenkins Independent School System’s Board of Directors Make Agreement

The Jenkins Independent School System’s Board of Directors have agreed to allow district staff members to join the Letcher County Schools Credit Union. The financial institution is administered through the Letcher County School System.

 

 

UK Gear Store to Reopen in Hazard

Wildcat Warehouse, a business that sells University of Kentucky gear, is reopening in Hazard where it had closed down its location in the Daniel Boone Plaza in April. They announced on the store’s Facebook page that they will be open for business once again, starting with a grand reopening celebration on August 12.
